BUTLER COMPOSITION STUDENTS  (majors - BM, MM):                                                      
B.M. - Approx. 4 - 5 freshman are accepted into the competitive program each year.  I have drawn regularly from the Great Lakes region, both coasts, (NY, NJ, PA, VA, CA, WA, OR), New England, and have had composition majors from many foreign countries 

M.M. - Approx. 4 - 5 graduate composers are accepted into the competitive program each year. The students in the Graduate Composition program usually come from the "outside" - including recent graduate students from Oberlin, Grinnell, Bowdoin College, Pamona College, University of Redlands, New York City, Long Island, NY, New Jersey, Connecticut, Boston, California, Minnesota, Florida, Wyoming, Alabama, Iowa, Washington D.C., Washington State, California, West Virginia, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Brazil, China, Canada . . .

My 200+ BM / MM composers have been accepted (most with graduate teaching fellowships / assistantships) into advanced composition programs (MM, PhD, DMA) at many prestigious institutions across the U.S. including Cornell University, the University of Michigan, Cleveland Institute of Music, Indiana University, Boston University, Princeton University, University of Southern California (DMA and the USC Film Scoring Program), University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Duke University, University of Chicago, NYU (New York University), SUNY Buffalo, SUNY Stony Brook, The Ohio State University, Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, UCLA, the Hartt School of Music, Peabody Conservatory of Music, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin, University of Maryland, Northwestern University, Florida State Univ., University of Texas-Austin, University of Missouri-Kansas City, Carnegie Mellon University, UMASS, UCONN, Duquesne University, University of Pittsburgh, University of Oregon, University of Washington-Seattle, Ithaca College, Syracuse University, Cal Arts ...

Many Butler undergrad composition students have been involved in the university STUDY ABROAD program, spending a semester - or an entire academic year - away from campus, including recent composers studying in Austria, Germany, Italy, England, Ireland, China, Japan and many other countries. Five (5) of my students have been awarded Fulbright Scholar awards for graduate study abroad and, in the late 1990's a Butler composer was awarded the prestigious 2-year Davies-Jackson Scholarship (national competition) for the composition program at Oxford -  Cambridge, England.

Since 1995, 3 composition students have been awarded the prestigious Presser Scholarship, our music school's highest academic honor. After final degrees, Butler composers enjoy active careers as university teachers and professional composers across the country and abroad . . .

  • December 31, 2001:  Schelle Violin Concerto Best Concert of the Year - The Indianapolis Star (newspaper) names the December 5, 2001 Ronen Chamber Ensemble concert (at the Indiana Historical Society) the BEST CLASSICAL CONCERT OF 2001 - this concert featured Schelle's 3-movement concerto for solo violin and chamber orchestra, Play Us Chastity on Your Violin (1984), composer conducting.
